Sprouting Oats and Groats

In sprouting oats and groats, 2/3 cup of seeds should be put into a bowl or into a sprouter if you have.  Add cold water, around two to three times greater than the seeds.

Seeds should be mixed to provide equal water contact to all.  For Buckwheat Groats and Hulless Oats, soaking time will be shorter since they can quickly consume all the water that they need.

Soaking them for too long will make them waterlogged and may stop them from sprouting.  So, oversoaking should be avoided at all times.

Emptying the seeds into the sprouter may also be needed at times.  The water used for soaking should then be drained.  Seeds can then be rinsed thoroughly with water.

The water extracted from the Buckwheat Groats is considered as the starchiest and the thickest.

Rinsing may take a while but if you do not get rid of the starchy water, they may not sprout.

They should be rinsed until the water that comes out becomes clear.  They should then be placed away from direct sunlight, probably at room temperature.

Afterwards, repeat the rinsing and draining steps for three times for around eight to twelve hours.  Since small sprouts are more preferred, the three time repetition is just enough.

Sprouting oats and groats can be highly influenced by the time of year you are sprouting, the climate and your own personal preference.

The ideal length of sprout to target is only around 1/4 of an inch.  Usually, this target can be achieved after two to four rinse and drain repetition cycles.

Tasting your crop after every rinse is also highly recommended after the soaking period.  Soaking seeds will already make them alive.

Since they are already alive, they already contain some nutrients and without enzyme inhibitors.  Eight to twelve hours after the final rinse, the process of sprouting oats and groats is already finished.

The draining of the water after rinsing should be done thoroughly.  The surface moisture of the sprouts should also be kept at a minimal level.  Their dryness translates to an easier storage in the refrigerator.

After sprouting oats and groats is done, you can place the sprouts in a sealed container or a plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator.
