Sprouting Jars and Lids

Using sprouting jars and lids is the most popular yet least expensive method for sprouting.

Jars can easily be cleaned because they are clear. Lids are also available in different mesh sizes appropriate for different types of seeds.

However, using jars would necessitate greater attention to detail.  You can also make your own screen lids by using cheesecloth, hardware cloth, a nylon stick plus either a rubber band or a string.

Using actual screws for the screen lid is highly advisable.  Jars can be used in sprouting or pre-sprouting any seed.  The seeds that can be perfectly matched with a jar include beans, mung beans, grains and nuts and seeds such as almonds, sunflower, pumpkins, peanuts, and others.

Leafy sprouts such as alfalfa or clover, alliums such as garlic and onion, brassicas such as broccoli and cabbage are also good seeds for sprouting in jars.

Extra details of sprouting should just be given extra focus.  Grass, greens and micro-greens can be pre-sprouted using jars but are not good for sprouting through jars.

Lids are available in different mesh sizes.  Using the widest mesh is encouraged.  The wider the mest, the easier it will be for water to flow in and out and the better the flow of air will be as well.

You may need to change your lids in some instances as you grow your sprouts.  During your last few rinses, hulls will be poured out together with water if you use the widest mesh for the screen.

Sprouting most seeds require a seed preparation stage.  During this stage, the jar should be filled with water.

Then, the water in the jar should be twirled and water should be poured out before repeating the same steps until the water becomes clear.

This may no longer be needed if you are using a screen with a mesh bigger than your seeds.

Jars and lids can be easily cleaned by scrubbing well with soap and water and rinsing well.

To sterilize, jars and lids should be scrubbed and soaked in bleach water.  Sterilizing is encourage every after 3 to 4 crops.

Food grade hydrogen peroxide is also more environment-friendly than the bleach.
